About Us

The little gal/guy can contribute! I was unable to help out much this summer with Tuberville VT ‘s successful squash project. So I decided to do what I could in my own small yard to benefit the local food shelf. My pre-existing 20’ x 25’ garden was already committed to three rhubarb clusters, a bunch of unproductive strawberry plants , three nursery size Colorado spruces, and a few small blueberry bushes. Nevertheless I was able to sneak in thirty or so grown- from -seed tomato plants.

In early July I watched the veggie prices at the local nursery head downhill fast. I bought about thirty really healthy, strong, two- foot- plus tomato plants and put them in along the stone wall in front of my house alternating them with the flowers that were already in place. At that time of year I probably could have gotten the plants free if I had mentioned they were for a non -profit. If I had waited a couple more days I could have intercepted them on their way out the back door to the compost pile.

By first frost almost 200 lbs of red tomatoes had been delivered to the food shelf and the manager told me he would definitely like to get the remaining 70-80 lbs of green tomatoes I had protected with coverings.

The moral of this story might be that many of us, even those with limited yard space, could probably convert or find unused spots to devote to the Tuberville mission.
